It's not just the building itself that can make a big impact on sustainability - the landscape around it is all part of the built environment and must also be considered:

• Rainwater management. A number of options are available to help control the run-off of rainwater: rainwater harvesting, attenuation systems, green roofs etc.
• Materials used. Ensure the products you use in your garden come from sustainable sources, for example timber products from well managed forests.
• Recycled materials. Many products are available made from recycled materials, such as recycled rubber mulch for play areas.

Jewson offers a massive landscaping range including Jewson branded products that meet these sustainable credentials.

Paving and Driveways

Jewson offers an extensive range of paving and driveway products, including both natural products such as stone and slate, and concrete manufactured products.

Both types of product are widely used in commercial and domestic environments and are unavoidable in making useable outdoor spaces. They are durable, have a long life expectancy and in most cases can be recycled after use.

Both, however, potentially offer problems for sustainable production. Natural products such as stone and slate use up precious natural resources and leave scars on the earth in the form of quarries; while concrete is very energy intensive to produce, burning a lot of CO2 in the process.

Interpave

All our paving and driveway products are manufactured by members of Interpave - an organisation dedicated to the development and constant improvement of the concrete paving industry.

All Interpave members are implementing the Cement Sustainability Initiative, developed through the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.

The cement industry as a whole has also signed up to the UK Government Climate Change Agreement and will deliver across the sector an energy efficiency improvement of 25.6% (between 1990 and 2010). Interpave members also actively recover the energy from waste materials by using them to replace fossil fuels.

The quarrying industry too is working with relevant Government agencies to ensure continuous improvement.

All quarries have rehabilitation plans and around 25% of aggregates used in the UK are from recycled and secondary sources - the highest rate in Europe.

Softwood and Hardwood Decking

Jewson offers a wide range of decking including softwood, hardwood, and a new innovation called ZeroDeck, all from International Timber - a sister company to Jewson and part of the Saint-Gobain group.

All our decking products are made from timber responsibly sourced to a strict environmental code and are also available with FSC Chain of Custody certification if required.

Softwood Decking

• Easy to cut, saw and shape.
• Accepts woodstains easily.
• Easy to maintain - clean and re-oil once a year.
• Pressure-treated to make it durable and water-resistant for up to 15 years.

Hardwood Decking

• Choice of 4 different timbers.
• Extremely durable - resistant to wear and tear and fungi.
• Maintenance with an appropriate oil will help retain its beauty for years.

Jewson ZeroDeck

• The UK's first 'zero carbon' decking.
• Made from Stellac Thermowood D2 clear pine.
• Thermal treatment process means greater resistance to fungi and bacteria.
• Available with certificate showing fully and independently audited energy and carbon trail - from seedling in the forest, through to delivery to the customer.
• Also available with Chain of Custody certification through selected Jewson branches if required.

Gripdeck

• A factory-applied anti-slip strip.
• Available with our range of softwood and hardwood decking.
• Provides additional grip, particularly in wet or icy weather.

Fencing and Garden Structures

Jewson offers a range of fencing from Grange - one of the market leaders and sheds from Rowlinson - a family run business.

All fencing and garden structures offered by Jewson are FSC certified - meaning the timber used to make the products has come from forests that have been independently evaluated as being well managed, according to strict environmental, social and economic standards.

Ecoscape

• Recycled rubber mulch - ideal as an impactabsorbing ground cover.
• Made from recycled shredded rubber, it is metal and fibre-free, non-flammable and comfortable under foot.
• Available in three colours - green, earthtone and blue.

Benefits

• Does not attract pets or wildlife.
• Does not blow around or scatter easily and will not float or wash away.
• Drop tested to BS EN1177 standards for playground use.
• Helps curb weeds, mould and fungus.
• Coloured using organic pigment not paint.
